Title: A Little Something Different

Author: Sandy Hall

Pages: 243 (paperback)

Point of View: 1st person (fourteen POV’s)

Genre(s): Young Adult

A Little Something Different revolves around Lea and Gabe, two college students who attend the same creative writing class. Not only that but they seem to enjoy the same food and love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Their attraction to one another is crystal clear to everyone around them except for the two shy students in question. Starting with their creative writing professor, to their friends and the baristas at Starbucks, everyone is keeping tabs on them in hopes they will end up together. For shy Gabe who gets tongue-tied when Lea is around and has a hard time following conversation with her sometimes, getting his interest across is a struggle. Meanwhile, Lea wonders if she confused Gabe’s barely apparent fondness for kindness. What if Gabe’s insecurities and secrets threaten to break them apart? And what happens when Lea starts to spend more time around a different guy? All eyes are on them without their knowledge. Will they end up together?

Quick Changes of Viewpoint

Told through fourteen viewpoints from the bus driver to the delivery guy and even a squirrel, A Little Something Different is an original love story. Although it might be a little hard at first to get into the groove of quick POV changes as the author stays only two to three pages on one individual and the only ones not included are the protagonists themselves, once you get a feel for it you’re fully invested. For this reason, it also has a bit of a diary feel.

Likable Characters Amidst This Feel-Good Book

The characters are very likable even Victor, a sullen co-student of theirs who somehow always ends up in the middle of their game of attraction, and Charlotte, the sometimes bitchy Starbucks barista. Shy and self-conscious, Gabe is the cutest out there and Lea’s obsession with her crush makes her very relatable. Although I do have to say the squirrel and the baristas were probably my favorite characters.

This novel is funny, adorable and an absolute feel-good book. Although you could say it’s a little dialogue-heavy and there is room for improvement, at the same time this is part of its charm.

No one should feel this invested in a couple they aren't a part of quote in an acorn on blue background graphic

A Novel For Shippers

A Little Something Different is a novel for shippers, all the side characters do it, even the ones that hate Lea and Gabe want them to be together already. The two of them are like magnets that are gravitating toward each other but won’t stick together. It is a light-hearted, humorous novel that is also perfect for reading slumps due to its short length.
